Vocabulary – physical appearance
If we want to describe a person, we can say what he or she is wearing. Last time we had a quick revision of words connected to body parts and clothes and wear. Today we continue with the topic. Other things, which can be interesting when we want to describe people, are: build, height, hair, age and special features. We can also say sth about people’s appearance in general, e.g. he’s handsome (ang. przystojny), she’s attractive (ang. atrakcyjny), he’s a good-looking man (ang. przystojny), she’s pretty/beautiful (ang. ładna/piękna).
BUILD AND HEIGHT
tall ≠ short (wysoki ≠ niski)
slender ≠ plump (szczupły ≠ pulchny)
skinny ≠obese (chudy ≠ otyły)
thin ≠ overweight (chudy ≠ z nadwagą)
HAIR
fair hair ≠ dark hair (jasne włosy ≠ ciemne włosy)
long hair ≠ short hair (długie włosy ≠ krótkie włosy)
straight hair ≠ curly hair (proste włosy ≠ kręcone włosy)
blonde hair ≠ brown hair (blond włosy ≠ ciemne włosy)
AGE
old > middle-aged > young = stary > w średnim wieku > młody
to be in one’s early twenties/thirties/forties/fifties/sixties/seventies = być lekko po dwudziestym/trzydziestym/ (…) roku życia
to be in one’s mid-twenties = być w wieku około 25 lat
to be in one’s late twenties = być przed trzydziestką
SPECIAL FEATURES
fair complexion ≠ dark complexion (jasna karnacja ≠ ciemna karnacja)
dimple (dołeczek w policzku)
freckles (piegi)
mole/beauty spot (pieprzyk)

2. She’s an attractive woman. She’s short and slender. She’s got fair curly hair. She’s in her mid-forties. She’s got a beauty spot on her cheek.
