Business English – trends, charts and graphs
Today we go on the topic of trends and graphs. Last time we discussed upward trends so now is time for downward trends, rapid downward, state of stability and of course adjectives & adverbs of movement.
Downward trend
When we talk about downward trends we can use the following verbs:
– go down
– decrease
– fall
– drop
– shrink
– bring down = lower
– show a downward trend
Rapid downward
When we talk about rapid downward we can use the following verbs:
– plummet (gwałtownie zniżkować)
– collapse
– crash
– slump
Stability
Lack of any trend which shows state of stability can be described by the following expressions:
– be flat
– stay the same
– be unchanged
– level off = level out (stabilizować się)
Adjectives and adverbs of movement
We can use adjectives and adverbs to underline the pace and intensity of current or past changes. Adjectives used to describe movement include: rapid, significant, sharp, substantial, gradual, steady, slow, slight. When we want to form an adverb we simply add -ly to the adjective. Sometimes one or two last letters are also changed:
rapid (szybki) => rapidly (szybko)
significant (znaczny) => significantly (znacznie)
sharp (gwałtowny, nagły) => sharply (gwałtownie, nagle)
substantial (solidny, pokaźny) => substantially (znacznie)
gradual (stopniowy) => gradually (stopniowo)
steady (stały, równy) => steadily (stale, równo)
slow (powolny) => slowly (powoli)
slight (nieznaczny) => slightly (nieznacznie)
I hope it’s useful for you. Stay with us and look forward to the third part of charts and graphs. It will be the last one, promise. Cheers 🙂
